The Myth of Moylan-Hogan

From all the information gathered from my grandparents, Internet, Census, BMD certificates I have come to the conclusion there was never such a surname as Moylan-Hogan. The surname Moylan originates from Irish counties such as Clare and Tipperary, as does the name Hogan. It is more than likely that William M Hogan's mother's maiden name was Moylan and therefore gave her son this as his middle name. William Moylan Hogan also gave it to his son (Guy Stewart Moylan Hogan). From all the information gathered for Guy S M Hogan, it appears he dropped this middle name when he joined the army. He went on to name his son Guy Joseph Charles Hogan, therefore being the first Hogan in England without the name Moylan. Guy J C Hogan got his middle name of Charles from his uncle Charles Hogan who appears on Census when he was 8, but we have no further information regarding him. Guy J C Hogan was never aware that he had an uncle as his father was sent to an orphanage when he was very young and then left for S. Africa.
